International Day of the Girl Child 2026: Let Every Girl Grow Freely

On 11 October, the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child. It is a day to look at every daughter, sister and young student around us and ask a simple question: is she free to grow into the person she is meant to be? In Kota, where classrooms and coaching halls are filled with girls chasing ambitious dreams, the answer we want is a confident yes. This day reminds us that the answer must be yes for every girl, not only for some.

Why this day matters

A girl’s future is shaped long before she becomes a woman. It is shaped by whether she stays in school, whether her voice is heard at the dinner table, whether she is allowed to play, to question and to fail without fear. When a girl is given these simple freedoms, she grows into a woman who strengthens her family, her community and her country. When they are taken away, we all lose something we can never fully measure.

Equality does not begin in offices or parliaments. It begins at home, in the small decisions families make every day about who studies, who speaks and who decides.

The bigger idea: childhood is not to be cut short

Our law protects this idea firmly. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 treats a girl below eighteen as a child, and says that a child is not to be married. The purpose is not only to stop a ceremony; it is to protect a girl’s education, her health and her right to choose her own path when she is ready.

Laws, however, are strongest when society walks with them. Every parent who keeps a daughter in school, every teacher who encourages a shy girl to speak, every neighbour who refuses to look away from injustice is doing the real work of this day.

Let us give our girls what they truly need: time to be children, the courage that comes from education, and the dignity of being treated as equals.
