On 15 October, India remembers one of its most beloved sons, Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam. Born in Rameswaram in a family of modest means, he rose to become the Missile Man of India, the President of the Republic and, above all, a teacher to an entire nation. In Kota, a city where countless young minds work every day towards science and engineering, his name is spoken with special warmth. On his Jayanti, we offer our humble homage.
The Missile Man who made India self-reliant
Dr Kalam devoted his life to the idea that India must be able to protect itself with its own knowledge and its own hands. As a scientist, he worked on India’s space and missile programmes and helped build the capability that earned him the title “Missile Man of India”. His work strengthened the nation’s defence and gave it confidence on the world stage. The nation honoured him with the Bharat Ratna, and later he served as President, where he became known as the People’s President.
Yet his greatest strength was not technology. It was character. He remained simple, disciplined and humble despite every honour. He believed that a strong nation is built not by weapons alone but by vision, hard work and integrity. He wanted India’s youth to dream big, and he reminded them that dreams are what keep you awake, not what you see in sleep.
The bigger idea: a nation built on curiosity and courage
Dr Kalam’s life is the finest example of a duty our Constitution places on every citizen. Article 51A(h) of the Constitution asks each of us to develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform. He lived that duty fully: he questioned, he experimented, he failed, and he tried again, always in the service of his country and with deep respect for people.
The truest homage to him is not only a garland on his portrait. It is a young person in Kota who keeps going after a setback, a teacher who answers one more question, and a citizen who chooses reason, honesty and service.

बड़ी बात: जिज्ञासा और साहस से बना राष्ट्र
डॉ. कलाम का जीवन उस कर्तव्य का सबसे सुंदर उदाहरण है जो हमारा संविधान हर नागरिक को सौंपता है। संविधान का अनुच्छेद 51A(h) हमसे वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोण, मानववाद और खोज व सुधार की भावना विकसित करने को कहता है। उन्होंने यह कर्तव्य पूरी तरह जिया – सवाल पूछे, प्रयोग किए, असफल हुए और फिर कोशिश की, हमेशा देश की सेवा में और लोगों के प्रति गहरे सम्मान के साथ।
कोटा में वकील के रूप में मुझे लगता है कि उन्हें सच्ची श्रद्धांजलि केवल चित्र पर माला चढ़ाना नहीं है। सच्ची श्रद्धांजलि है वह विद्यार्थी जो एक असफलता के बाद फिर उठ खड़ा होता है, वह शिक्षक जो एक और सवाल का धैर्य से उत्तर देता है, और वह नागरिक जो तर्क, ईमानदारी और सेवा का रास्ता चुनता है।
