World Mental Health Day 2026: Care, Dignity and the Right to Heal

Every year on 10 October, World Mental Health Day asks us to pause and look at something we often keep hidden: how we are really doing inside. Here in Kota, a city that welcomes young people from every corner of India with big dreams and heavy expectations, this day feels especially close to home. Behind every rank, every exam and every busy working day is a human mind that needs rest, kindness and, sometimes, help.

Why this day matters

For too long, a struggling mind has been treated as a weakness, a family secret or a simple lack of willpower. It is none of these. Anxiety, sadness and stress are part of human life, just as fever and injury are. The real harm comes from silence: the friend who is afraid to speak, the parent who does not know what to ask, the student who believes one failure is the end of the road. This day reminds us that compassion is not a soft virtue. It saves lives.

The bigger idea: care is a right, not a favour

Indian law has caught up with this truth. The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 recognises that every person has a right to access mental healthcare, and that a person living with mental illness must be treated with dignity, privacy and equality. It also takes a humane view of a person who attempts to end their life, presuming that they were under severe stress and need care and support, not punishment. The message is clear: no one should suffer in silence, and no one should be ashamed to ask for help.

What this day asks of us is wonderfully ordinary. Listen without judging. Check on the quiet friend. Let children know that their worth is not a marksheet. Speak about the mind at home and at work as naturally as we speak about the body. And if you are struggling yourself, reach out to someone you trust or to a qualified professional. Asking for help is an act of courage, not defeat.

May this World Mental Health Day bring a little more patience, a little more gentleness and a great deal more understanding into our homes and our city.
