Shardiya Navratri and Agrasen Jayanti 2026: Faith, Strength and Sharing

Warm wishes to everyone on the beginning of Shardiya Navratri and on Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti. With Ghatasthapana, homes across Kota and all of India welcome Maa Durga for nine nights of prayer, fasting, music and garba. On the very same day, many families remember Maharaja Agrasen, a ruler revered for his compassion and his belief that a community grows strong when it lifts everyone together.

Why this day matters

Navratri is, at its heart, a festival of inner strength. Over nine nights, devotees honour the many forms of the Goddess, and each form carries a lesson: courage in the face of fear, patience in hardship, wisdom over anger, and the strength to protect what is right. The fasts and prayers are not only rituals; they are a way of steadying the mind and renewing one’s resolve to live with discipline and kindness.

Maharaja Agrasen’s memory adds a beautiful note of fairness and sharing. A cherished tradition tells that every newcomer to his city was welcomed by each household with a brick and a coin, so that no one began life there with nothing. Whether one reads it as history or as a parable, the idea is timeless: prosperity is meant to be shared, and no one should be left behind.

The bigger idea: faith that is free and respectful

These festivals are lived freely in our homes and streets because our Constitution protects that freedom. Article 25 of the Constitution guarantees every person the freedom of conscience and the right to freely profess, practise and propagate their religion, within the limits of public order, morality and health. That freedom belongs to every Indian equally, and it is most truly honoured when we celebrate our own faith while respecting the faith of our neighbours.

So as the dandiya sticks clap and the diyas glow this Navratri, let us carry its spirit beyond the pandal: strength with humility, devotion with kindness, and prosperity with sharing.

Wishing you and your family a blessed Navratri and a joyful Agrasen Jayanti.
