World Food Day, observed every year on 16 October, invites us to look at the plate in front of us with fresh eyes. Every meal carries the work of a farmer, the rain of a season, the effort of those who carry, cook and serve. In Kota, surrounded by the fields of Hadoti and fed by the Chambal, we know how much labour and hope goes into a single harvest. This day is a reminder to be grateful, to waste less and to share more.
Why this day matters
Food is the most basic need of human life, and yet it is also deeply tied to dignity. A child who eats well can learn; a worker who eats well can build; a mother who eats well can raise a healthy family. Hunger, on the other hand, quietly takes away a person’s strength, confidence and future. That is why our traditions have always treated food as sacred, and the act of feeding someone as one of the highest forms of service.
The bigger idea: no one should go to bed hungry
India has given this belief the force of law. The National Food Security Act, 2013 aims to ensure that people have access to enough good-quality food at affordable prices, so that they can live a life with dignity. It places special care on those who need it most, including children, pregnant women and nursing mothers. In simple words, it treats food not as charity but as a matter of right.
Laws can open the door, but each of us decides what happens at our own table. Let us respect the farmer by not wasting what he grows. Let us cook what we need and share what we can. Let us teach children that leaving food on the plate is not a small thing. And let us make sure that those around us, the domestic worker, the daily-wage labourer, the student far from home, are not forgotten.
On this World Food Day, let gratitude, restraint and sharing guide our kitchens and our city.
